Mission
Tia Moyo provides grants to people living below the extreme poverty level, or those who are economically disadvantaged due to extraordinary circumstances.
Our community-based team will work with recipients to identify needs and develop projects, ranging from making infrastructure improvements to their homes, paying for school fees and materials, providing starting funds for a business, buying livestock, and more.
Evidence
A wealth of studies have shown that direct cash transfers to people living in poverty is one of the most cost-effective, sustainable, and empowering methods to alleviate poverty [1,2,3,4].
Because we aim to support those living below the extreme poverty level, we do not expect recipients to pay back grants.
Compared to loans, microgrants allow us to support high risk, low return projects, giving recipients freedom to make long-term investments in their surroundings.
Additionally, microloans are not empirically proven to result in better outcomes on average than direct cash transfers [5].
How it started.
Nikolas visiting Leticia, Hemed, and their two children in 2022.
Leticia and Nikolas met in 2019, when he was serving in the Peace Corps in Tanzania. Leticia, who has worked with the Peace Corps for more than 20 years, was his language and cultural instructor, and the two quickly became friends.
When the pandemic wrought havoc on the economy in Tanzania, Leticia and Nikolas developed a system of micro-loans, to support individuals and small businesses in the Dar es Salaam area. Since then, the program has flourished, and more than 150 projects have been supported.
