Blog Post 4: New toilets for Kileni, Zuhura and Fatima
In recent months, we have made progress in improving access to sanitation infrastructure by constructing three new toilets for Kileni, Zuhura and Fatima.
Kileni, a widow and mother of six, previously relied on two barrels as a makeshift septic tank. This has now been replaced with a permanent septic tank, along with a house made of bricks and cement, ensuring her family has safe and hygienic facilities.
Zuhura, also a widow and mother of two, suffers from tuberculosis, which limits her ability to work. Despite her illness, she collects plastic bottles from the streets to earn a small income. She also rents out several rooms in her house (rent is ~7 euros a month). The construction of her new toilet not only benefits her family but improves the living conditions of everyone who lives there, too.
Fatima, a widow and mother of three, recently had her self-constructed toilet replaced with a newly built one. In addition to caring for her own children, Fatima also supports two children from other family members, as is common in Tanzania.
This initiative has provided these families with much-needed sanitation, contributing to better health and hygiene in their daily lives.
