Blog Post 5: Goats, school supplies, and more!
The last few months have been a busy time at Tia Moyo! Thanks to a number of generous donations, we have continued to support Tanzanians in need.
Goats
One type of project has been giving Tanzanians goats. After our team has determined a need for support, recipients receive a male and female goat. These goats provide families with a much needed economic lifeline, either by selling the offspring or by using the goats as collateral for a loan. This year, we have provided six families with goats!
School Supplies
In Tanzania attending public school is free, and there are many schools around the country. However, students are required to provide their own supplies, ranging from notebooks to uniforms. The cost of these supplies can be prohibitive, leading to poorer students not being able to attend their classes.
The statistics of schooling in Tanzania reflect this: while around 70% of kids complete primary school, only around 30% end up completing secondary school (the gender balance is very close to 50/50, with a slightly more girls than boys attending).
For our first project of 2025, we teamed up with three schools in Dar es Salaam, to identify students who could not afford required materials. Teachers either immediately identified them, or let us know which students had not shown up for classes in the first week. We contacted their families, and bought them the required materials to attend classes. In total, we helped 25 students go to school, providing huge relief for families and a positive learning environment for kids!
Providing medical supplies
Health insurance in Tanzania is rare. That means that when accidents happen, Tanzanians can be stranded in their new realities. Jafari is the father of three children, and was in a car accident in which he unfortunately lost his leg. He and his family reached out to us, asking for any help we can offer. As a first step, we bought him crutches, so that he can stay mobile and care for his family. Once he is settled in his new reality, we will find a way to help him start a business.
