Blog Post 1: A Toilet for Lustina
Lack of proper sanitation is a leading cause of the transmission of fecal-oral diseases. Related illnesses are a leading cause of death in Tanzania, and can easily be minimized with proper sanitation infrastructure. However, such infrastructure can be too expensive.
Lustina’s old toilet.
Our first recipient, Lustina, for example, was using tires that she collected for a makeshift septic tank, and built a structure out of pieces of metal and cloth that she found lying around.
Now, thanks to your contributions and donations, we were able to build Lustina a proper toilet! A permanent septic tank was installed, and a house was constructed out of bricks and cement. Not only is this a permanent construction, it is much safer to use and easier to clean. Lustina told us that she “could not believe” that she now has such a nice toilet!
